The summer of 2019 is winding down. This year’s summer kickstarted in New York City in a particularly hot way as a heatwave of 95°F to 100+°F swept the nation. This list filled with books, electronics, and other goodies are the things I enjoyed this year. Taking some time off to enjoy the sun and luxuriate, self-reflect, and be grateful to wake up and enjoy the sun is what it is all about. Amidst chaos and uncertainty, we must find hope, love, and optimism, never losing the strength and enthusiasm to enjoy and make things better.
Here are some of the things I love this summer.
1. Book (Non-fiction): Jia Tolentino – Trick Mirror
Jia Tolentino is a writer who is not only smart but eloquently sassy. These essays elucidate specific topics we often try to avoid in conversations. What I love about this book is how Jia is so clearheaded and to-the-point with her writing. Whether it is talking about race, social media, celebrities, or the current societal problems we are under, she brings new light and fresh thinking. This summer is a summer to dig deep, contemplate, step back, and find the best of our current situation to grow as a society and maybe find a way to be a better person along the way.
2. Book (Fiction): Song of Solomon – Toni Morisson.
On February 18th, 2019, Toni Morisson died. I have been admiring her work for a very long time. She is an American treasure and at that point, a living literary legend. It is unfortunate to see her pass away, but what is left are works of art that will pass the test of time. Starting with Song of Solomon is a great way to acquaint ourselves among one of the greats of American literary legends.
After a certain expensive wireless earbud that shall-not-be-named recently died on me due to that fact that I have been using it in the gym, I decided to give these a try. Taotronics have been making high-quality products for a very modest price. These are fantastic wireless earbuds that can compete with the Airpods. They perform excellently on subway rides, with their ample noise isolation that you can block off lots of sounds. They can be used in the gym as they have some sweat or waterproof on them. And the best thing also is that it sounds excellent. I truly recommend them!
3. Journal Notebook: The Mind-Body Peace Journal for Serenity and Clarity
What a beautiful and straightforward journal with everyday prompts for self-reflection. Journaling is a great habit to have for self-development. Love the simple minimal design and I find the layout inviting for writing when you don’t feel like writing. A great notebook to own or even to give away. It is reasonably priced to boot.
I mean, it is a: “7-in-1 Multi-Use Programmable Pressure Cooker, Slow Cooker, Rice Cooker, Steamer, Sauté, Yogurt Maker and Warmer.”
I feel like this was the best Amazon Prime Day purchase ever. I have been holding off purchasing this because I was unsure of how good it would be. I finally listened to the rave reviews from others. This kitchen gadget is the best pressure cooker and hot pot for cooking. Who knew pressure cooking could cut down so much cooking time. I have cooked soups, American, Filipino, French cuisines, and more, and it always makes the beef and chicken tender and flavorful. I am happy with it, and I highly recommend it. Cooking saves a lot of money than buy your meals, and this machine may make that ambition of saving become a reality.
Here is a great Filipino Chicken Adobo recipe (from YouTube):
